Living under the dictatorship was a nightmare for many Brazilians.
There were human rights violations.
There was a violent repression, such as the systematic use of torture and murder.
There was famine, salary reduction, and social oppression.
Public health was precarious.
There were forced migrations due to economic factors and major projects.
Arts and the media were censored.
Students and professors from public and private universities were persecuted.
Environmental devastation was a reality as well as aggression against the peoples that were capable of preserving it, that is, the Indigenous peoples.
But there were also resistance movements.
The twenty narratives that are part of the present exhibition address these issues and become a reference for understanding what the country inherited after 21 years of the 1964 regime.
The project “Dictatorship: Everyday Life and Heritage” was carried out by Museu da Pessoa in collaboration with the Vladimir Herzog Institute, the Institute for Advanced Studies (IEA) of the University of São Paulo (USP), the Quebrada Cult Collective, and the audiovisual production company Navega.
This work was supported by São Paulo Human Rights and Citizenship Office on the basis of a parliamentary amendment presented by Councilman Eduardo Suplicy.
