THE CURRENT ECONOMIC CRISIS AND SOCIAL INEQUALITY

According to research carried out by the Institute for Mobility and Social Development (IMDS, 2022), 47.3 million Brazilians reached the critical poverty level at the end of last year. The number is equivalent to 22.3% of the Brazilian total population.

The total number of Brazilian people below the basic poverty line reached a record at the end of 2021, with 23 million people living with less than BRL 210 per month. This is equivalent to 10.8% of Brazilians.

The World Inequality Report (2021), from the World Inequality Lab at the Paris School of Economics, shows that the poorest half of the Brazilian population earns only 10% of the total national income. In practice, this means that the poorest 50% earn 29 times less than the richest 10% in Brazil.
